Our travel year started out with a bang when we went to Maui with the C.A.P. Informatics Committee meeting. We took my folks and the kids and we all had a great week. Dan wanted to go on a helicopter tour of the island, in lieu of a birthday party, so he and I did that. We all toured by car, enjoyed the beaches and pool, and ate great food at Mama's Fish House.
We went to Mammoth for skiing/snowboarding with 5 families of from U.C. and had a great time. Unfortunately, Dan ended up having to have emergency surgery on our way back home. He's fully recovered now, but the recuperation took a bit off his baseball season.
John and I answered the C.A.P. call again and traveled to New Mexico. We had never seen Santa Fe, and had a marvelous time touring Bandolier National Park before this year's devastating fires.
Our summer travel was more limited; I had started the new job at AP, and John had quit his job at PML/PMG. With our income uncertain for the next several months, we stayed close to home. Camping in the local mountains with 17 families from U.C. was a blast. Marilyn Weber took me on a wild and wooly mountain bike ride that I'll never forget. The kids were able to see foxes and wild turkey on one hike, so that was pretty special. No matter where we go for the next few years, we're bound to have one or two of the neighborhood boys along as companions. It's always more fun with a crowd!
The early part of this year was spent minding the new Lab Dx store, and waiting for receivables to flow through the billing process. We learned how to budget more carefully and got by just fine, but travel wasn't in the stars. We did go to Mammoth with "the gang" again, with no health problems! Both boys improved a lot.
We have made a couple of trips already this summer, since I'm off and John's practice is running smoothly. We went to Yosemite in mid-June, stopping in Sequoia along the way. The waterfalls were full and the crowds moderate. We rode horses, hiked, rafted, and played Mille Borne in the lodge all evening. Silly to have to go away to play cards with the kids, eh?
We also took a trip up to Vancouver and Seattle. Vancouver is a great city. Clean, young, diverse, full of water and mountains. The food there was excellent and we had a chance to visit our friends the Brays and meet their son, Sean. We snuck down to see John's college buddy, Mike Larson, and his family. They really know how to seea Mariner's game; choosing between owners' box and dugout seats was so hard that John sat in both!
I'm going to keep an eye out for cheap airfares, since I'd like to visit Lisa Gold, my girlfriend who just moved to New Jersey, Janet Rubin, my dear friend in Atlanta, Sue Crandall in D.C. and my brother, Phil, in N.C. during my time off. I know John would like to go to Indiana at some point, so the kids could meet more of Patsy's relatives. He's also aching to return to Spain, this time with family in tow.
