John still gets out onto the basketball court, sometimes as often as four times per week! He plays at the
He's moved to " >40 yr. old" leagues and "B" leagues, but it's still good fun, with good friends. The local UC men have started a team too, playing on Sunday afternoons. What a great experience to have all the kids hanging around watching the dads for a change! The boys and I try to go to the games as homework permits. We brag that we're the most loyal fans (Dan went to his first game when he was three days old), but my dad, Al, is probably the most reliable. All the guys know him, and worry if he's not there for a few weeks.
He also coached both boys' rec center basketball teams in '99. That's the best training a parent can get. You'll complain a lot less about coaches if you've walked in their sneakers!
The latest craze is softball. He was on a dominant intramural team during Med School, but those fly ball reflexes are a little rusty. Luckily, the teams are made up of men with day jobs.
A good day with the family involves some sunshine, some sports, maybe a nap in the afternoon. We try to BBQ on Sunday nights, and have plenty of propane heaters to make sure we can enjoy the deck year round.John can spend hours reading computer books or working on the computer. He gets lost in a magazine for hours. He loves to shop (latest new toys are a digital camera and a bigBBQ). He and I still get out on the occasional date, everything from opera and charity balls to Cajon Speedway!
